Witch doctors and security forces in Gambia have detained up to 1,000 people on suspicion of being witches, Amnesty International said on Wednesday. Police in the African country dismissed the reports as lies.

40-year quest for missions resumes near Rockdale (Austin American-Statesman)

ROCKDALE — In the 1740s, Spaniards constructed three missions within one mile of each other to assert Spanish control in the New World and to attempt to convert Native Americans to Christianity. The Candelaria, San Ildefonso and San Francisco Xavier missions stood along El Camino Real de los Tejas, also known as the King’s Highway.
